365 Days Photography Challenge: Third Week.
Tips for taking pictures on snowy days.
I love snowy days because they are a great opportunity to capture some beautiful and unique photos, but they also come with some challenges. In this blog post, I’m going to share some tips and tricks on how to shoot winter landscape photography in the snow.
First of all, I had to prepare myself and my camera gear before heading out into the cold. I wore several layers of clothing, shoes that would keep me warm and dry (on some days I wore two layers of wool socks), gloves and a hat. I didn’t wear sunglasses to protect my eyes from the reflected light of the snow because I wasn’t walking far from home, and it was cloudy but be aware that sunglasses are recommended.
I was straggling to go out in day 16, therefore I had to use my creativity to do something creative with the things that I have at home. The minimalist style came out again…no surprise by now!
Your Photograph Camera under Cold Weather
I also brought some extra batteries, as the cold weather would drain them faster, and kept them close to my body to prevent them from getting cold. During rainy or snowy days, it’s also recommended to protect the camera and lens from moisture. Some people have a special bag for that; however, I use a plastic bag for food storage. I usually cut the end of the freezer food bag and make a tunnel where I place my camera.
Another thing to keep in mind is to adjust your camera settings to get the best exposure and focus for your snow photos. Snow is very bright and can fool your camera’s metering system, resulting in underexposed images. I always shoot in manual mode, and this is a good way to avoid this problem. Focusing can also be tricky in snowy conditions, as the camera’s autofocus system may struggle to find contrast in a white scene. To overcome this, I prefer to shoot also in manual focus.
Photography Composition in snowy Days
Regarding the composition, look for animals, people, buildings, trees, or anything that catches your eye. You can use colour to make your photo interesting, I didn’t have much pop of colour during those days, however if you find someone wearing a red or yellow coat, consider this as another option. I incorporated some features that added some extra mood to the images, like paw prints in the snow. Be imaginative to create interest in your photos.
The snow is gone now, and the rain is back, which makes my photo challenge more difficult. Let’s see what I can do in the following days, it is also a surprise for me.🙈😅
Bye for now.
