Week thirty-six of my 366 Photography Challenge has been a whirlwind, balancing the demands of being a mum and a freelance photographer. From spontaneous baking sessions with my daughter to catching beautiful moments in nature, I’ve continued to find inspiration despite the busy schedule. Here’s a look at my journey this week through the lens of everyday life.
Day 244: Busy Life as a Mum and Freelance Photographer
After a hectic day working on my photography projects, my daughter decided she wanted to bake cheese biscuits for her lunchbox! As I was short on time and energy, I made them the focus of today’s photo. The biscuits turned out wonderfully, with a little twist on the original recipe – I swapped mustard powder for chilli and BBQ seasoning.
Cheese Biscuits Recipe
Ingredients:
120g plain flour
120g butter
120g mature cheddar cheese (grated)
½ tsp hot chilli powder
½ tsp classic BBQ seasoning
Method:
Preheat the oven to 170°C/Fan 150°C/Gas 5.
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl using your hands until a dough forms.
Roll out the dough to 5mm thickness and cut out biscuits using a cutter.
Place the biscuits on a floured baking tray and bake for 10-15 minutes until golden and crispy.
These biscuits disappeared quickly from the kitchen! They pair excellently with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Day 245: Clouds
One of the joys of living in Aberdeenshire is the vast open skies. I couldn’t resist capturing the dramatic cloud formations that are so often on display here.
Day 246: Volunteering
Now that school is back, I’ve resumed my volunteer work at my daughter’s school. I sometimes bring my camera along, taking advantage of the opportunity to capture early images for the challenge and reduce the pressure of shooting late in the day. I often find myself drawn to Aberdeen’s beautiful architecture.
Day 247: Craft from Ghana
I’m not usually one for souvenirs, but while living in Ghana, I picked up this piece for my bookcase. With the weather turning awful on day 247, I decided it would be the perfect subject for today’s challenge.
Day 248: Red Squirrel in Westhill, Aberdeenshire
On a lovely day in Aberdeenshire, I went for my usual walk, uncertain of what I’d photograph that day. Luckily, I was paying attention to my surroundings and heard a rustling nearby. After waiting patiently, a red squirrel appeared. These creatures are incredibly fast, so capturing a good shot required a lot of persistence.
Day 249: The Mist in Westhill, Aberdeenshire
After a gorgeous sunny day, my workaholic tendencies kept me from heading out to the Aberdeen Doors Open Day and work out with weight. By evening, the mist had started to roll in, a bucolic scene – perfect for a photo.
Day 250: The Framed Road
Sunday mornings are for relaxation. I spent mine enjoying coffee in bed with some books before tackling chores like laundry, recycling, and receiving my Tesco delivery. While running errands, I took my camera along and captured the beautiful framing of trees along the road before autumn’s winds steal them away.
This week’s challenge has reminded me of the beauty in everyday life – from baking with family to the natural wonders of Aberdeenshire. Each day offers a new opportunity to capture the world around me, no matter how busy life gets.
