Last week, I had a fascinating conversation with a client about her business and how to elevate her visual communication. She confided in me that, initially, she was confident in her vision. However, after discussing her ideas with others, she found herself feeling confused and uncertain about the direction of her business.
I could completely relate to her experience. In the past, I often shared my ideas and plans with others, only to later feel lost or see those projects fail to materialise. Over time, I adjusted my approach. I began to keep my plans more private, sharing only my completed work. Yet, even now, I sometimes fall into the trap of discussing my future projects, only to notice they rarely come to life as I'd hoped.
What I’ve learned is that when we share our dreams or plans too soon, we invite others to project their own fears, doubts, and limitations onto us. While their intentions may be innocent, their input can cloud our clarity and impact our momentum.
Interestingly, a guest on Andrew Huberman's podcast (Neurobiology professor from Standford University) explained that sharing our goals can also give us a premature sense of accomplishment. When people praise our ideas, our brains receive a reward, and we lose the drive to make those plans a reality because we’ve already experienced the satisfaction.
So, if you're feeling unclear or stuck in your business, consider whether sharing too much too soon might be contributing to that confusion. It's not that there’s anything wrong with you or your business—it’s just a natural outcome of being overly open with your ideas. Sometimes, the best way forward is to keep your vision close until it’s ready to be unveiled.
