Happy Disability Pride Month! / by Leticia Gaidon Bradford

As we celebrate Disability Pride Month this July, it's a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the diverse and vibrant community all of us are part of. This month, all of us honour the achievements, stories, and contributions of people with disabilities, recognising the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in every aspect of life.

The Disability Pride Flag is a powerful symbol of our collective identity and strength. Each colour on the flag carries a significant meaning:

❤️ Red represents physical disabilities, reminding us of the resilience and determination of those living with visible physical challenges.

💛 Yellow signifies neurodiversity, celebrating the unique and varied ways our brains can function and process information. It's a nod to the creativity and different perspectives that neurodivergent individuals bring to our world.

🤍 White stands for non-visible and undiagnosed disabilities. It highlights the often unseen struggles and triumphs of those whose disabilities might not be immediately apparent, encouraging us to be mindful and supportive of everyone’s experiences.

🩵 Light blue represents emotional and psychiatric disabilities. This colour is a tribute to the strength of those managing mental health conditions, reminding us of the importance of mental well-being and the need for empathy and understanding.

💚 Green symbolizes sensory disabilities, encompassing a wide range of conditions that affect senses such as sight, hearing, and touch. It's a call to acknowledge and appreciate the ways in which sensory experiences shape our interactions with the world.

Together, these colours create a tapestry of diversity, strength, and pride. Let’s use this month to educate ourselves, raise awareness, and advocate for a world where everyone, regardless of ability, is respected and included.

Let's continue to champion inclusivity, embrace diversity, and create a more accessible world for all.
