Let me share with you something I once heard from a clinical psychologist about the natural world, which perfectly illustrates my message.
Scientists studying zebra behaviour faced a recurring problem: they kept losing track of the individual animals they were observing because all zebras look so similar. To solve this, the researchers decided to paint one zebra to make it stand out. Unfortunately, this zebra was quickly singled out and eaten by lions.
Undeterred, the researchers tried tagging another zebra’s ear. The result? That zebra was also eaten by lions.
Why did this happen? Zebras' survival mechanism relies on their similarity. By blending in with the herd, they confuse predators, making it harder for lions to single out a target. Once a zebra is marked or tagged, it becomes an individual, distinct and, unfortunately, easier prey.

What’s the lesson here?: Avoid blending in with competitors!
As an entrepreneur, you don’t want to be a zebra. 😜🦓
Blending in with your competitors creates confusion for potential clients. People would love to consume your products and services, but they’re looking for a clear, unique, and appealing choice.
Many times, I’ve noticed that the visuals for many businesses and professionals look alike, they’re not memorable.
Stand Out in Your Personal Brand
When I work with clients, I focus on creating a memorable brand by building an original look tailored to the mood and personality of their business. What remains consistent across all my work is the refined, polished style that defines my photography.
Copying someone else’s style or approach won’t help you stand out. Have you ever noticed how some websites look the same in their visuals and style? That’s what happens when businesses rely on generic ideas and stock photos.
Stock photos, while convenient, often feel cold and impersonal. If you want to be remembered, don’t settle for average. Be mindful and personal with the visuals for your brand, whether it is to represent your profession or business, so they can tell your story.

How to Get Started
There are fundamental images you should have for your business as a professional or entrepreneur; you might want to read this guidance blog post for more insights.
Now, let’s clarify your brand’s style. This is all about embracing what makes you unique, instead of blending into the crowd. Too often, entrepreneurs fall into the trap of copying their competitors, whether it’s the same muted colour palette, similar fonts, or identical styles.
Take yoga instructors, for example: many follow a trend of soft pastels, flowing scripts, and serene stock images. But does that truly reflect who you are?
To avoid this repetition, start by focusing on your personal preferences. What colours make you feel confident or energised? What textures or patterns resonate with your values? Maybe earthy tones and natural textures reflect your grounded approach, or vibrant hues and bold lines capture your dynamic personality. These elements should feel authentic to you and align with the message you want to communicate.
Remember, your brand is your opportunity to stand out. By adding your personal touch to your visuals, you create something memorable for your clients, something that feels honest and connected to your business, rather than a carbon copy of what’s already out there.
So, instead of following trends, start with what inspires you and tailor your brand's visuals. Let your brand tell your story, and you’ll find it naturally attracts clients who resonate with your values and energy.
“Your brand is a gateway to your true work. You know you are here to do something — to create something or help others in some way. The question is, how can you set up your life and work so that you can do it? The answer lies in your brand. When you create a compelling brand you attract people who want the promise of your brand – which you deliver. ”
The Role of the Photographer for Your Visuals📷
Don’t feel bad if you’re struggling to find clarity in this aspect. I often help my clients define their brand’s colours and the style of their visuals (including their outfits).
Call a photographer and have an honest conversation about your needs. Share your vision, your challenges, and your brand’s personality. Don’t make assumptions about the process, find a photographer who’s the right fit for you and can bring your vision to life.
Remember, your personal brand is your unique mark. Don’t be a zebra.🦓🦓
