Every year, on 18th May, the world comes together to celebrate International Museum Day. This is a topic close to my heart as I love to visit museums when I go on holiday but also locally. Some people go to religious buildings; I go to forests and museums. For that reason, on this occasion, I would like to highlight the invaluable contributions of museums to society, recognising them as essential institutions that preserve our past, inspire creativity, and provide a sanctuary for intellectual and emotional growth. As we commemorate this day, it’s crucial to reflect on why museums matter and how they enrich our lives in countless ways.

I visited the exhibition Popular at the IVAM (Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno), which in English means Valencian Institute of Modern Art. It reminded me of a sociology book that I read in my early twenties. Both the exhibition and the book discussed popular culture and its layers in society and history. I had the visual representation of what I read many years ago in that book, and I connected myself with these two moments of my life (past and present). It was not only a knowledge journey but also a kind of metaphysical one while I was exploring that large exhibition.
Another aspect is the community-focused initiatives, such as local history exhibits and cultural festivals, that further strengthen the bonds between museums and their communities. These activities not only celebrate local heritage but also encourage active participation and collaboration, making museums dynamic and inclusive spaces for all.
